Global Opportunities Abound at PhilaU

Today we have a guest blog from senior Textile Design student Rachel Robinson about her internship and study abroad experiences.  Not only did she have the opportunity to work for Abercrombie & Fitch’s home office, but she also got to take her talents to Scotland for four months!  Check out Rachel’s blog…

This past summer I had the opportunity to work at Abercrombie & Fitch’s home office in New Albany, Ohio as a CAD design intern. The company provided housing for all the interns on Columbus College of Art and Design’s (CCAD) campus located right by downtown Columbus. Columbus is a lovely city filled with amazing restaurants and cute boutiques. In the city there are numerous venues—Bruno Mars was on tour while I was there!  I enjoyed going to a wonderful market called The North Market for fresh produce as well as local goods.  Columbus is also the home of White Castle Cheeseburgers and Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream!  Yum!  Here are two pictures from my apartment in Columbus and Jeni’s Ice Cream!

During the first week I went through training and was assigned to a team in their Abercrombie women’s division. While working there I met with head designers, vendors, and even the CEO of the company on numerous occasions. I primarily used Kaledo for creating new print ideas for the upcoming Spring/Summer seasons. In addition, I assisted head designers with CAD work, color, and overall patterns that we felt would sell well in this department. Towards the end of my internship, they flew us to Manhattan to shop the market for new trends and products that would fit our customer and benefit our brand. This research was compiled into a packet that we presented to the company displaying our research and aided our final designs.

After interning at Abercrombie over the summer, I left for a semester abroad in Galashiels, Scotland for four months. I had never been abroad prior to this experience, so it was quite exciting! I lived on Heriot-Watt University’s Scottish Borders campus in the residence halls with four other students including another PhilaU Textile Design student. The location was perfect for getting to classes and running into the nearby town. It offered an amazing view of the hills! My classes included two weave courses, one knit course, and one print course. The facilities were amazing! All of the yarns were made on the University’s campus, and every student had the capability to create their own desired hues for yarns. They had numerous looms available with helpful technicians to guide you along the way. I learned so much while in Scotland!

The photos above were from Donegal, Ireland and a view from the hilltop in Galashiels, Scotland. Below, I want to share photos from my housing on the Heriot-Watt campus, the beach in Donegal, Ireland, and a Christmas fair in Edinburgh, Scotland. I miss it so much!

Although it took a little while to get adjusted and to adapt to their design process, it was absolutely worth it. I traveled all across Scotland, went to its two major cities, Edinburgh and Glasgow, and had the opportunity to spend some time in Ireland and England. I am definitely planning on returning as soon as possible! It was absolutely beautiful and an amazing place to go abroad and study textiles! I hope you have the opportunity to study abroad while at Philadelphia University!
