“I’m working in Marketing on young skin innovation, so my work typically includes brainstorming new concepts and working on their forms, names for those and how to position each product within an acne and cleansing set. Being a FIM major at Philadelphia University has really given me an extra edge in this position, because I have been able to apply all of the business knowledge that I’ve acquired through school, as well as the design that I’ve learned (I actually saved my team last week when the graphic design team wouldn’t complete what we needed, so I did it myself on Photoshop!).”

Attention all Fashion Related Majors: Come hear from Kevin Burke, president of the American Apparel and Footwear Association (AAFA), who will share his optimistic views on the future of the American apparel and footwear industries and its many employment opportunities. His presentation is based on his many years of experience as the dynamic leader of the AAFA, the national trade association representing apparel, footwear and other sewn product companies, and their suppliers which compete in the global market.
United By Blue (UBB) is an ocean-friendly brand of apparel based in Philadelphia. UBB sells a line of organic cotton t-shirts with vintage nautically-inspired motifs, rugged waxed canvas bags, and artisan jewelry. What sets the brand apart from other labels is its mission: for every product sold, United By Blue removes 1 pound of trash from oceans and waterways around the world through company organized and hosted cleanups. The startup has developed the infrastructure to plan and host waterway cleanups within the company so that, as the company grows, so does the environmental good work.
UBB’s bags were featured on GQ.com this holiday season, and the company was also featured as one of the Most Innovative Small Businesses of 2011 by the Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg Businessweek. Since UBB was founded in May 2010, it has removed over 80,000 pounds of trash at over 60 cleanups with the help of over 1,000 volunteers.
UBB is recruiting now for its spring 2012 internship program, and the company has positions in an array of disciplines. Because UBB is still in its startup phase, all interns will have the opportunity to contribute on a real and meaningful level and to take leadership roles on projects of their own design. Some of the highlights for fashion industry management students include:

Where: UBB’s Philadelphia headquarters at 340 N 12th Street (A short walk from the Market East train station)
When: January 24-May 18
Time Commitment: The minimum weekly commitment is 20 hours with shifts no shorter than 4 hours
Credit: Students can receive academic credit for this internship
Travel Reimbursement: While this position is unpaid, UBB will cover the travel expenses of its interns for the duration of the program. Successful interns may have the opportunity to pursue available positions at the ever-growing company.

The Fashion Apparel Merchandising Experience (FAME) student organization took a tour of QVC this semester. QVC headquarters, Studio Park, is located in West Chester, PA. Students learned about the history of the successful multi-media retailer, saw live broadcasts being filmed and even got to see Rachael Ray! FAME also had the privilege of going on a private tour of the Quality Assurance department.
