The Art and Design World: A Lecture by Lanny Sommese

Distinguished and well-decorated designer, Lanny Sommese, regaled the crowd with his stories and prolific work spanning a four decades plus career. Born in East Moline, Illinois in 1943, Lanny Sommese grew up in Gainesville, Florida. He attended the University of Florida where he studied graphic design, art and played basketball. After graduating with a Bachelor of Design Degree and a B.F.A. in painting in 1966, Sommese accepted a research fellowship at the University of Illinois in Urbana, where he received an M.F.A. in Graphic Design in 1970. Since then he has been a member of the Pennsylvania State Universityfaculty and is currently a Distinguished Professor, Head of Graphic Design and a fellow of Penn State’s Institute for Arts and Humanities.

Students Experiment with Ebru, 15th Century Turkish Art Form

Graphic Design Communication students in the Package Design course practiced a 15th century Turkish art form called ebru, a marbling technique using a rectangular bath and special acrylic paints to create a design on water. Ebru expert Richard Aldorasi of Ebru Richsilk Designs gave a guest lecture and taught students how to create silk scarves using the ebru technique.

One Day One Goal to Celebrate International Day of Peace

As a way to participate in the worldwide celebration of the International Day of Peace (September 21), a group of PhilaU Graphic Design students and faculty played a pick-up soccer game for One Day One Goal. The informal game was led by senior-year Graphic Design student, Natalie Vespe, who is also an Assistant Coach for the PhilaU Womens Soccer team.
