Designer, Activist, Woman: A Panel Discussion


The Graphic Design Communication program at Jefferson recently hosted “Designer, Activist, Woman,” an exciting panel discussion organized by Associate Professor, Maribeth Kradel-Weitzel. The panelists spoke to students about a wide range of inspiring experiences with activist-focused endeavors and helped the students understand how they can use their design skills to promote positive change.


Golden Moments for Professor Walker and Gold Collective


Assistant Professor Renee Walker‘s studio Gold Collective has enjoyed a fruitful year with local, national, and international recognition. In Fall 2016, Gold was invited to submit a poster for the international Anfachen Award under the theme “World of Women.” Gold’s poster Work, Family, Life was selected and exhibited on the streets of Hamburg, Germany. In addition, two of Gold’s projects were selected and featured in the 2016 Print Regional Design Annual: Exploring Science in the Studio Identity and a letterpress cover for California College of the Arts MFA Writing Book. Judges included Jennifer Morla, Jessica Walsh, Timothy Goodman, Marc English, Gail Anderson and Bill Grant.


Wonderful Recent Developments from Warkulwiz Design Associates


Jefferson Graphic Design long-time adjunct Professor, Bob Warkulwiz, and his design firm Warkulwiz Design Associates (including alum, senior graphic designer Emily Zuwiala (PhilaU GDC, 2010) have been very busy and productive lately. Among the activities and accolades of WDA: Warkulwiz Design Associates was listed among the best graphic design firms in the region for the 9th straight year.


Alum named Rookie Awards Runner-Up!


Congratulations to 2016 grad, Ronnie Alley, for his incredible Runner-Up win in the globally competitive Rookie Awards Graphic Design category! This year, there were 2,752 entrants from 627 different schools and 81 countries.


Adobe Design Achievement Awards


The Graphic Design Communication program was well represented in this year’s Adobe Design Achievement Awards. Congratulations to semi-finalists Gabi Stahley, Myra Lloyd, Leah Pellegrino, Aubrey Kohl, Lauren King, Shannon Gahagan and Laina Healy. You make us proud!


Alumni, Ali Doucette, named the 2017 AIGA Philadelphia Fresh Award Winner!


The Fresh Award celebrates one emerging designer who is creating stellar work and breaking boundaries in our local design community.

Ali Doucette graduated from Philadelphia University in 2013. Currently she is a Designer at J2 Design. Perviously she was worked with Karma, Two Paperdolls, DiSanto Design and Steve DeCusatis Design, all of whom are part of the larger PhilaU family.


Highest Honors: Jefferson Graphic Design Top Design School in Graphic Design USA Magazine

For the sixth year in a row, the Graphic Design Communication program at Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) was named a Top Design School by Graphic Design USA Magazine. Jefferson was among only thirty-seven colleges and universities nationwide recognized with this prestigious distinction.


Mario Zucca’s Adventures in Mapmaking!


Adjunct Professor, Mario Zucca, is a talented, award-winning illustrator. His work has been commissioned for The Boston Globe, The Hollywood Reporter, Oprah Magazine, Newsweek and Maxim, just to name a few. Several years ago, Mario started making very detailed, intricate maps, and they are amazing! It all started with his wildly popular map of Philadelphia which was followed by maps of Pittsburgh, Portland and others.

Mario’s latest creation is a glorious depiction of all 59 US National Parks in one map. $10 from each map purchase will go toward the preservation and protection of our nation’s national parks. Highest Honors: PhilaU Graphic Design Students to Watch 2017 in Graphic Design USA Magazine


For the sixth year in a row, the PhilaU Graphic Design Communication program is represented in the prestigious “Students to Watch in 2017” issue of Graphic Design USA Magazine. Lauren King and Kelli Seiple were named Students to Watch in the February 2017 issue. Previous alums mentioned were Nicole Meyer, Caroline Noebels, Sarah Driban, Jessica Eversmeyer, Kristine Garcia, Annelise Babula, Jewell Richardson, Christina Lanzisero and Natalie Vespe as previous Students to Watch. Congrats Lauren and Kelli!


Walker’s Poster Wins Anfachen Award 2016


Walker’s WORK FAMILY LIFE poster exhibited on the streets in Hamburg, Germany.

Professor Walker’s studio Gold Collective was invited to submit to the Anfachen Award, an international poster competition under the theme “World of Women”:

The theme of this year fomenting Award in Hamburg is “World of Women” and is dedicated to strengthening and supporting women. Women fight for their rights, climb the corporate ladder … Women achieve a balance between education, entrepreneurship and volunteering. The women’s world, a world of contradictions, is to be shown on the posters: Loud and soft. Startling and profound. Striking and provocative.Questions and answers posing print.

Of the 200+  submissions, 25 poster were selected, printed, and exhibited on the streets of Hamburg, Germany. All 25 posters can be viewed here.
