Capstone 2013: Bastardized Blues
Design and Illustration by Jeffrey Stiefel Bastardized Blues is a book encompassing the history of one subgenre of punk rock: punk blues. I’ve always loved music, but it wasn’t until I started learning how to play the guitar that I really explored what was out there. I’ve gone thorough many phases of listening, but my favorite genre has always been punk. I love the rawness, the emotion, and the energy that punk rock radiates. Ten years later, I discovered the blues. My philosophy on music is if you can play the blues [on guitar], then you can play anything. The music itself is extremely complex, plus it’s hard to match the raw emotion many successful artists are known for. When I found out there was a genre consisting solely of punk and blues, I fell in love. That’s why this book is special to me; it’s about music I really love, that I listen to every day of my life. So I wanted the design to be special; just as raw and energetic as the music.
These bands are well known in their industry, but it’s hard to find high quality photography that’s useful for a project like this. So, I decided to screen print all the imagery in wild, vibrant colors while also experimenting with unique, unconventional typography layouts. The images seen throughout the book are the actual screen printed images, no "scans" here. I believe there is an essence to screen printing that can't be replaced by a conventional digital printer.
