Coach Shirley Approaches 600 Wins

Women’s Basketball Coach Tom Shirley is approaching his 600th career coaching win, after earning victory number 599 in a 82-52 win Jan. 6 over Georgian Court University. Shirley is in his 22nd season at PhilaU, and his 30th overall as a head coach.

He could reach 600 wins as early as this Wednesday, Jan. 19 at 6 p.m. at home game against Chestnut Hill College.

Shirley, also the director of athletics, is currently the winningest active women’s basketball coach in Philadelphia and is ranked fourth all-time in Philly among women’s coaches after Jim Foster (formerly at St. Joe’s and currently at Ohio State) with 716 wins at the start of 2010-11, Rene Portland (formerly at St. Joe’s and retired) with 693 wins and Theresa Grentz (formerly at St. Joe’s and currently retired) with 671 victories.

The next most-winning active women’s coach in the Philadelphia area is Villanova’s Harry Perretta, who in 31 years has accrued 593 wins as of Dec. 30, 2010.
