The men’s and woman’s basketball teams will take the court Tuesday, Nov. 13 for the first home games of the 2012-13 season. The Rams take on University of the Sciences, with the women’s game starting at 6 p.m., followed by the men’s team at 8 p.m.
The PhilaU men’s and women’s basketball teams have recently been voted as the No. 1 and No. 3 teams, respectively, in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) preseason coaches’ poll.
The men’s team will return three starters from last year’s squad, which finished with a 19-10 overall record and qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the 32nd time in program history—the second most appearances in Division II history.
Among the men’s returning starters is 2011-12 All-CACC first team guard Jim Connolly. Last season, Connolly was ranked seventh in the CACC in scoring, averaging 16.8 points per game. He was the conference’s top free throw shooter, making a stunning 90.9 percent of his attempts, and he also drained 85 three-pointers — a conference best.
Also returning to the men’s team are sophomore guard Nick Schlitzer and junior guard Nick Christian. Schlitzer placed third in the CACC in free throw percentage (88.0), three-point percentage (45.0), fourth in made three pointers (45), and 16th in scoring (14.0 points per game). Christian ranked fourth in the conference with 143 assists, was sixth with 47 steals, and eighth with a 2.0 assist-to-turnover ratio.
The women’s team will return three starters from last season’s team that posted a 20-9 overall record and reached the CACC Tournament.
Senior forward Kristen Blye — an All-CACC third team selection as a junior — is Philadelphia’s top returning scorer and rebounder. She averaged 13.0 points, which ranked 11th in the conference, and 6.7 rebounds in 29 games.
Freshman center Tori Arnao has also been selected as the first CACC women’s basketball rookie of the year of the 2012-13 season by the conference office. In her first collegiate game, Arnao recorded 21 rebounds and 11 points in the Rams’ 56-52 season-opening victory against Lincoln University on Nov. 10.
The games will be held on Herb Magee Court in The Gallagher Athletic, Recreation and Convocation Center.
