NBC10’s Vai Sikahema visited PhilaU last week with Mychal, a 17-year-old high school senior with an interest in fashion design, to talk to students and faculty about PhilaU’s Fashion Design Program for a Wednesday’s Child segment scheduled to air Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 11 a.m.
Wednesday’s Child is a weekly feature that helps recruit adoptive families who can provide permanent, loving homes for foster children in Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey. Mychal , who is in foster care, is interested in pursuing his passion for fashion at a college or university next year.
At PhilaU, Mychal, his case worker, and Sikahema, who is NBC10’s sports director, visited Joyce Reber’s senior Collection I class, getting a chance to speak with students about their designs, sketches, fabrics and what studying fashion design at PhilaU is all about.
Senior Katie Voigt showed Mychal her inspirations notebook from when she was in high school, as well as how her designs progressed from sketch to outfit. She joked at one point that the bright pink feathery fringe at the bottom of her dress matched his hair.
After the class visit, interim fashion design program director Anne Hand spoke to him in more detail about PhilaU’s fashion design program.
The Wednesday’s Child segment with Mychal will re-air on Saturday, Oct. 12 and Sunday, Oct. 13 at 9 a.m.
