The Basketball Tournament Holds Debut Event at PhilaU

This weekend, 32 teams will face off in the Gallagher Athletic Center at Philadelphia University for the chance to win $500,000.

PhilaU hosts The Basketball Tournament from June 6 to 8 in the Gallagher Athletic Center.

A privately held company, The Basketball Tournament is an open, single-elimination, winner-take-all basketball tournament featuring prominent athletes from across the country. Philadelphia University will host the tournament in the Gallagher Athletic Center from Friday, June 6 to Sunday, June 8. This is the first time The Basketball Tournament has ever been held.

The tournament will feature local NBA player and NCAA National Champion Hakim Warrick, various Philadelphia Big 5 players and alumni teams from Saint Joseph’s University, Temple University, Princeton University, the University of Notre Dame, Cornell University, the United States Air Force Academy and the Villanova Wildcats 2008-09 Final Four Team, as well as some other familiar faces.

Former PhilaU shooting guard Jim Connolly ’13 is playing for the North Broad Street Bullies at 8:45 p.m. Friday on court one. Two more PhilaU men’s basketball players, point guards Nicholas Christian ’14 and Tayron Thomas ’06, will play for Eberlein Drive at 10:15 a.m. Friday on court one.

The Basketball Tournament’s unique team selection process required team general managers and coaches to recruit family, friends and others to the tournament’s website as fans. Out of the 32 total participating teams, 24 were automatically selected for having the most online fans. Tournament organizers selected the remaining eight teams. Together, the teams have amassed a collective 28,648 online fans.

Rounds one through four will take place over the weekend in the Gallagher Athletic Center. The location of the $500,000 final is yet to be determined.

Tickets are available for $20 and can be purchased here.
