For the first time, a team of Philadelphia University Innovation MBA students will compete in the finals of the Philadelphia-area CFA Institute Research Challenge. On Feb. 15 at the Union League in Center City, Vishnu Kapadia, Oluwaseun Oyekanmi, Krupa Patel and Zachary Ssebatindira will present their investment research reports on Axalta Coating Systems to a panel of industry experts.
“Making it to the presentation round is a confirmation of the quality of the PhilaU finance program and the high caliber of its students,” said Peter Maher, assistant professor of finance who serves as an adviser to the team. “It also gives the students an added dimension of professional-level experience, focusing on communication and presentation skills which complement the technical aspect of the written report section.”
Beating teams from Temple University, University of Pennsylvania, Ursinus College and West Chester University, the PhilaU team advanced to this round by submitting written reports on Axalta, a global provider of liquid and powder coatings, Maher said. PhilaU now will face off against teams from Elizabethtown College, Villanova University and University of Delaware in the finals.
“The morale of the team is at an all-time high,” Oyekanmi said. “We’re incredibly hopeful and confident. We have the momentum and the drive, and we’re certainly going to give it our all.”
The goal of the CFA Institute Research Challenge is to teach best and ethical practices in equity research through a real-world experience to the next generation of investment professionals, according to the organizers. In addition, the students will be able to discuss career opportunities with representatives from Vanguard, PNC and other investment firms in attendance.
The winner of the Philadelphia-area final will move on to the CFA Institute Research Challenge Americas regional final in April in Seattle, and the regional champion will advance to the global final in Prague later in the month.
