2014 How Magazine Self-Promotion Design Competition

news_program_nadinhow1The PhilaU Graphic Design Communication program is pleased to announce that senior-year Graphic Design student Nadin Radwan has won a Merit Award in the Student work category in the 2014 HOW Promotion & Marketing Design Awards, with her entry titled: Identity Generator. In Nadin’s words: “One of my strengths as a designer is my love for color. Throughout my work, I try to generate visually pleasing color combinations, and at the same time try something unexpected. As a self promotion, I created a tool that is fun to use and generates different combinations.”

Nadin’s project was produced in the Spring 2014 Design VIII. Capstone course under the supervision of Assistant Professor Eric Karnes. Winning work from the 2014 HOW Promotion & Marketing Design Awards will be featured in the September issue of HOW Magazine. In winning this award, Nadin joins a long list of past winners of this prestigious award from the Graphic Design program, including: JoEllen Smith and Natale Vespe (both PhilaU GDC, 2012); Laura Farnen (PhilaU GDC, 2011); Mike Norcross (PhilaU GDC, 2009); Susie Atchison, Craig Bell, Christian Belton (all PhilaU GDC, 2006); and Erika Lubowicki (PhilaU GDC, 2005).

Alina Wheeler: Iconic Designer/Author/Brand Identity Consultant

news_program_alina1Iconic Designer, Author and Brand Identity consultant, Alina Wheeler (middle, with Visiting Assistant Professor Rose DiSanto (left) and Adjunct Professor Dianne Zotter-Mill) recently presented a lecture to students in the Brand Identity course. Ms. Wheeler—a past partner in the Philadelphia-based Graphic Design firm Katz Wheeler Design, a former national board member of AIGA and an AIGA Fellow—is now an independent consultant speaking around the world on Brand Identity.

Wheeler is the author of Designing Brand Identity: An Essential Guide for the Whole Branding Team, fourth edition (the textbook used for the course). The fourth edition is published in seven languages, and is used as a resource by universities, design and branding firms, entrepreneurs and corporate marketing departments. Her disciplined process has been used successfully by large organizations like Vanguard, and non-profit organizations like Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest. After working with the book for the semester, students were able to hear Alina’s words of wisdom first hand. She is also the author (with former Adjunct Professor Joel Katz) of Brand Atlas: Branding Intelligence Made Visual, 2011. Thanks to Dianne and Rose for organizing.
