New York City Field Trip

news_program_nycfieldtrip2018-1By Abbey Pitzer (Jefferson Graphic Design, 2019) and Jessica Scandiffio (Jefferson Graphic Design, 2019)

In early November an intrepid group of 30+ Jeffferson Graphic Design students and faculty embarked on a field trip to New York City for the day. Our group arrived at the Cooper Hewitt Design Museum—a part of the Smithsonian—to see some great exhibitions, in particular one on color. Afternoon activities included visiting the Society of Illustrators Museum; a studio tour of WeWork Headquarters; another studio tour of Open; and a behind-the-scenes view of the Herb Lubalin Study Center of Design and Typography at the Cooper Union. The field trip was supported by the AIGA Jefferson Student Group.Cooper Hewitt

Jess: The museum was nothing I had expected. It was my first time at the Cooper Hewitt and I was very surprised. It was an awesome experience and I enjoyed the interactive pens that allowed you to save your favorite works of art and look at them again later online. The color exhibition was my favorite. It was really amazing to be able to use the pens to draw patterns and see them reflect on the walls around us. Even Continue reading

“Not Just Eye Candy: Design Work by Frank Baseman” University of Delaware Exhibition

news_faculty_basemanUD-1Professor of Graphic Design Communication Frank Baseman is preparing for another solo exhibition of the work of Baseman Design Associates and Base Press, to be held at the Recitation Hall Gallery at the University of Delaware.news_faculty_basemanUD-2Not Just Eye Candy, Design Work by Frank Baseman is an exhibition of select work from Frank Baseman’s three-decade-plus career as a professional graphic designer. Featured in the exhibition is a continuation of recent work combining two of Baseman’s favorite long-term interests: rebuses, those words and images coming together to make a visual puzzle (think “I Heart NY” and “America Runs on Dunkin”), familiar to many of us since childhood when we first encountered them while learning to read, and letterpress printing, a centuries-old method of relief printing.

news_faculty_basemanUD-3In a playful manner, Baseman has reinterpreted well-known quotes and phrases using rebuses, and all of this work has been printed by hand using a vintage letterpress. Also on display are several typographic explorations, including work produced during an Artist/Designer in Residence at UD’s Raven Press; Continue reading

Alum Ronnie Alley at Adobe San Fran

Adobe was looking for ways to increase their online presence and drive user engagement for their online portfolio website, Behance. The solution they came up with was a weekly design stream that would be shot live, where anyone watching from around the world could tune in and interact with the featured designers. Each week would focus on a different field in design; be it graphic design, illustration, typography, UI/UX, etc. The designer’s that Adobe chose to feature on these live streams would come from a wide array of backgrounds and levels of experience. Alum Ronnie Alley (2016) was recently fortunate enough to be approached by Adobe to be one of their featured designers during a week focusing on graphic design. news_program_ronnieadobe2So in mid February for two hours a day, for three days Ronnie worked on a design project live and answered any questions that the audience watching at home would have. During those three sessions Ronnie worked on the redesign of his personal branding; with the first day focusing on the logo, second on a supporting illustration, and the last day was spent applying different assets to a full design Continue reading
